The Importance of Investing in Professional Photos

Why are photos considered an "investment"?

I get it—it’s the question that’s always on everyone’s mind: 'Why does custom photography feel like such a big investment?' > Trust me, I hear you! But here’s the little secret behind the lens: there is so much more to this craft than just 'pressing a button.' When you book a session, you aren’t just paying for a person with a camera; you’re hiring a location scout, a wardrobe consultant, a professional editor, and a hype-person who’s dedicated to making you feel amazing!

Most of the time, a photography business is a one-person show. I’m the coordinator making sure your garden wedding runs smoothly, the contract writer keeping things professional, and the 'baby whisperer' during those sweet, chaotic newborn sessions.

You’re investing in quality, heart, and a business owner who is 100% tucked into the behind-the-scenes work to make sure your memories are perfect. At the end of the day, these isn't just a 'service'—it’s your family's legacy, captured in the best light possible. And to me? That’s worth every bit of the heart I pour into it.

Every business starts with a 'why,' and for the vast majority of photographers, it honestly isn't about the money. We’re creatives at heart! We have such a soft spot for other people’s stories, and we just want to illustrate them through our eyes.

When you book with me, you’re trusting me with your story. That’s why I spend so much time obsessing over the 'client experience.' I don’t just want your photos to be beautiful; I want the whole process to feel joyful and easy. Sure, snapping a few photos on the beach during vacation is a fun way to grab a memory, but a professional brings so much more to the table. We’re trained to know the lighting that makes you glow, the posing that makes you feel your best, and—most importantly—we’re there as a third person so you can actually stay in the moment.

There’s a quote that hits me so hard personally: 'Family photos are often so important because they're usually the only photos Mom is actually in.' As the 'designated photographer' for my own family (like most moms are!), I’m rarely in the shot. And if I am? Usually, no one told me to fix my hair! Professional family photos are that one special time where Mom gets to be at the center of it all, captured by someone who is trained to see the emotional cues and tiny details you might not even notice.

I learned this lesson in a big way recently. I had my first baby in May 2025, and I was so excited to take his newborn photos. To be totally honest, my 'why' back then was a little shallow—postpartum was horrid, and I just wanted a visually perfect photo of my baby to post on Instagram.

Fast forward to today: I’ve decided not to share my son’s identity online at all. So, my original plan for those photos? Technically a 'waste.' But here’s the thing—I look at those photos every single day. They have become the most cherished things I own. They aren't for the 'gram anymore; they are for me. They are my return ticket to those first few weeks, and that is an investment you truly can't put a price tag on.

I am a huge advocate for capturing memories because I see firsthand how fast time moves. It is truly a thief. After having my son, I would literally try not to think about him growing up because it would send me down a spiral of emotions. But having professional photos has helped me be okay with him growing; it takes the edge off because I know I have those moments held forever.

I grew up in a "VHS home-movie family," and watching those old tapes of my siblings and me is still one of my favorite things to do. Even as a kid, it grounded me and made me appreciate my life so much more. But even now as an adult looking back on how invested my parents were in videotaping our holidays, it just isn’t done as often these days. We are often so busy "living in the moment" that we forget to pull out our phone—or heck, a camcorder—or the video just doesn't feel as intentional because it’s just on our iPhone.

We have such amazing technology at our fingertips It’s so easy to take the thousands of photos in our pockets for granted. But sometimes, it takes a professional photographer documenting your story to really pull those everyday iPhone moments together. Having those intentional, high-quality images helps you see the beauty in the 'ordinary' days and appreciate your own life a little more deeply.

Just like souvenirs from a vacation bring back the fun, photos are the souvenirs of our everyday lives. In our busy worlds, we outsource so many things to make life less stressful—why not do the same for our memories? Hiring a professional to document your life while you stay present in it is an investment that will likely outlive us all.

You’re not just buying a gallery; you’re inspiring a generation of your own family who will get to hold onto that same nostalgia years from now.

At the end of the day, I’m not just here to deliver a gallery of pretty images; I’m here to help you pause the clock. Whether it’s the quiet, milky breath of a newborn, the wild laughter of a family session at sunset, or the intimate 'I do' in a hidden garden, these moments deserve to be preserved with intention. Don’t let the 'busyness' of life or the fear of a price tag keep you from owning your history. Investing in professional photography is a gift to your future self—a way to ensure that even when time does its thing and carries us forward, you’ll always have a way to look back, breathe it all in, and remember exactly how it felt to be right here, right now.
